LFASS is an area-based payment under article 31 of Regulation (EU) No 1305/2013 focuses on providing financial support to farmers operating in areas that face natural or other specific constraints.

The eligibility is contained within The Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (Scotland) Regulations 2010 which were developed and approved by the European Union at that time.

The Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS) in Scotland excludes farmers and crofters without livestock because the scheme is designed to support active farming activity, defined primarily through minimum stocking density requirements linked to specific types of livestock farming. The Scottish Government has assessed this approach against EU Rural Development Regulation Article 31 and concluded that the livestock-based activity test is consistent with EU rules.

The use of livestock requirement is within the discretion allowed by EU RDRs, to focus support on the predominant and necessary farming systems (grazing) in naturally constrained areas to prevent land abandonment.

Scottish Government remains fully committed to co-developing the future payment framework of the four-tier support system. We will work with our farmers, crofters and stakeholders to ensure we bring them with us on our journey to deliver the vision for agriculture in a way which ensures a just transition to make Scotland a world leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

There are well-established processes, set by the Courts, to assess the amount to be paid to a successful party seeking to recover its legal costs. The Scottish Government is following these processes and has committed to publish its final costs associated with For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers once these costs have been agreed.

NatureScot have been informed by the Deer Code in every section 7 (control agreement) intervention it has taken since the publication of the Code in 2011, as required under the Deer (Scotland) Act 1996.

NatureScot has also had due regard to the Code in undertaking its actions under section 6A (deer management plans) since 2011 and considers it in much of their advisory work with Deer Management Groups, landowners and occupiers as it necessarily informs their approach.

The approach set out in the Code is also used as part of their deer authorisation functions regarding out of season and night shooting.

The Scottish Government’s Chief Scientist Office (CSO) supports open competitive grant and fellowship schemes for applied health research in Scotland across a wide remit. This remit is inclusive of consideration of applications for funding for research on eye health. Applications submitted to these schemes are assessed through independent expert peer-review with funding recommendations made by independent expert committees.

Funding awarded through these schemes in the years from 2019 - 2025 for research relating to eye health has included:

Competitive grant and fellowship schemes

NHS 24 have robust practices in place to ensure patient safety is paramount and that the appropriate procedures are in place for assessing risk.

Scottish Government monitor the performance of NHS 24 and regularly engage with the service to discuss performance related issues. NHS 24 is required to escalate any concerns about patient safety to the Scottish Government immediately, in line with agreed protocols.

The Scottish Government Cancer Strategy for Scotland (2023 – 2033) is underpinned by multi-year phases of planned actions.

The initial three-year Cancer Action for Scotland Plan 2023-2026 has supported the strategy by determining actions to help us achieve our ambition to improve survival and provide excellent, equitably accessible care. These span our 11 ambitions laid out in the strategy and describe investments across a range of activity.

These include increased funding to support SACT and Acute Oncology Services, additional cancer waiting times funding to reduce waiting times and increased funding to expand the Scottish Cancer Registry to improve data.

Scottish Government is considering any new funding required ahead of the next Cancer Action Plan due to be published in 2026. This will recognise the context of the record investment of £21 billion into health and social care made through our 2025-26 Budget.
