Merchant Navy Day 2025

  • Submitted by: Tim Eagle, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 05 September 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-18608

That the Parliament welcomes Merchant Navy Day, which will be marked on 3 September 2025; notes that the day provides an opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to the men and women of the UK merchant navy and fishing fleets, past and present; remembers in particular the enormous contribution and sacrifice made by merchant seafarers during times of conflict, including the Second World War, when the British merchant ship, SS Athenia, was sunk on 3 September 1939, only hours after the outbreak of war; acknowledges that merchant seafarers continue to play a vital role in sustaining the UK economy and ensuring the safe transport of goods, fuel, and essential supplies; commends the work of The Seafarers’ Charity and others in raising awareness of the day and encouraging communities across Scotland to fly the Red Ensign as a visible symbol of support, and encourages people throughout Scotland to take a moment on Merchant Navy Day to honour the service and dedication of all merchant seafarers.
