World Rainforest Day

  • Submitted by: Ariane Burgess, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 12 June 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17945

That the Parliament recognises that 22 June is World Rainforest Day; further recognises that Scotland is home to rare and threatened temperate rainforest; acknowledges what it sees as the international importance of this rare habitat and the vital work happening to restore it on the west coast, led by the Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest; understands that temperate rainforest is one of the most biodiverse habitats on Earth, and is home to a vast array of wildlife, some of which is found nowhere else in the world; believes that Scotland’s rainforest is vital for biodiversity recovery, climate mitigation, a growing green economy and overall health and wellbeing; regrets reports that, despite being one of Scotland’s most important habitats, long-term threats to rainforest loom over its future, and congratulates the local communities, crofters, farmers, and landowners playing their part to manage and restore it through funded landscape-scale projects.
