Recognising International Day for Biological Diversity

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 21 May 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17637

That the Parliament recognises International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2025, and observes that the theme for 2025 is harmony with nature and sustainable development; notes that the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which was enacted to end and reverse the loss of nature within 25 years, contains 23 targets to be met by 2030 and five global objectives by 2050, including restoring 20% of degraded ecosystems and reducing the introduction or settlement of invasive alien species by 50%; understands that the Sustainable Development Goals connect to this framework, and that both agendas must advance together as they support one another, and believes that community initiatives, such as the Clepington Gardens Allotment Association in Dundee, which has worked for over a century to improve biodiversity, help to progress objectives outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals by alleviating poverty, reducing hunger, and promoting health and well-being.
