Information on how many cancer patients have been offered cryopreservation of (a) eggs, (b) sperm and (c) embryos in each year since 1999 is not held centrally. An expert Gametes Group will shortly begin work to look at protocols for patients who require fertility preservation.

The following A702 road safety schemes have been constructed this financial year:

Easter Howgate which was completed in April 2016 – This scheme involved the removal of a parking lay-by and a change in camber to the carriageway to reduce the possibility of vehicles leaving the carriageway. The scheme cost was £175k.

Carlops gateway treatment was partially completed in June 2016 – This scheme involves upgrading the gateway road markings and relocating two vehicle activated signs. The gateway road markings are complete and the relocation of the signs is programmed for later in 2016.

The following A702 road safety schemes are planned:

Garvald Bus Layby provision – This scheme involves the installation of a new bus lay-by and associated facilities (bus/ shelter) and will include resurfacing due to the change in alignment. This will be constructed in late summer/autumn 2016.

Biggar 20mph provision – This scheme was identified as part of Transport Scotland’s Pilot 20mph areas. The promotion of the pilot 20 mph limits proposed for the trunk road network is intended to support road safety generally, but target safety benefits for vulnerable road users in particular. We held an exhibition to consult with the community on our proposals. The next stage is to formally promote the orders for the proposed changes through the traffic regulation order statutory process. Before promoting the order we will consult with the community council and other stakeholders to gain their views now the proposals are finalised.

Hillend – We are currently looking to promote a no waiting/loading/unloading traffic regulation order at Hillend to improve junction visibility, reduce indiscriminate parking and improve traffic flow through the A720 Lothianburn junction. We are also considering feedback from the community regarding the installation of an uncontrolled crossing traffic island near the chiropractor clinic on the A702.

In addition to the previously completed works this year on the A702 there are a number of maintenance schemes programmed for the A702 for the remainder of this financial year. These include resurfacing schemes at:

Joppa Wood

West Water

Candymill

Biggar High Street

Douglas Hill

Wandel Railway Bridge

Duneatonfoot

Lawhead farm

North of Flotterstone

Lamington Toll House

In addition to these resurfacing schemes there is a £185,000 Structural Maintenance scheme programmed for Hazlieburn to Rutherford.

As always, these programmed works are subject to available budgets and competing priorities across the network.

The A71 is not a trunk road and as such is the responsibility of the local authority.

The unprecedented scale of flooding that took place over the winter required substantive and immediate action to support those communities affected. In January 2016 the First Minister announced that the Scottish Government would provide funding to local authorities to allow them to pay out grants of £1,500 to people whose properties were flooded at any point from July 2015 to 31 March 2016.

The number of grants paid out by local authorities as of 15 August 2016 to households and also to businesses, community groups or charitable organisations (listed as ‘other’) is given in the following table:

The Scottish Government is committed to protecting youngsters against Meningitis B (Men B) and this is why Scotland is one of the first countries in the world to have introduced a national Men B vaccination programme.

On vaccination policy, the Scottish Government is advised by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). As with all vaccination programmes, the JCVI keeps its advice under continual review, and recently reconsidered the evidence for vaccinating older children with Men B. Following discussion of the matter, the JCVI did not recommend a catch up programme for older children. The full detail of the JCVI advice is available at:

Should the advice of the JCVI change in the future the Scottish Government will of course consider it carefully.

The Scottish Government is working with a variety of stakeholders, including parents’ groups, to agree which items will be included in the boxes. The Scottish baby boxes will be based on the model first developed in Finland, and will provide a range of baby clothing, equipment and simple, consistent information for new parents. The box will also double as a cot for new born babies, should parents wish to use it in this way.

At the point when car parking charges were abolished from December 2008, NHS Scotland hospitals (with the exception of three private finance initiative (PFI) run car parks) were estimated to collect £3.6 million of income each year from car parking charges. From 2009 onwards, NHS Boards have not received any income from car parking charges and it is estimated that this policy has saved patients and staff over £27 million.

Prior to 2008, the Scottish Government did not collect details on how much income was raised through car parking charges.
