Children and Young People鈥檚 Commissioner Scotland (Strategic Plan 2024-28)

Meeting date: 17 April 2024

Ben Macpherson

I presume that, in addition to higher and further education, you will take into account considerations to do with employers and the apprenticeship programmes.

The Government already has a lot to consider from the various reviews that have taken place in recent months and years. Do you feel that the doors are open, so to speak, for you to feed in your thoughts, as you have just mentioned?

The issue is that young people are contracted in law and they do not have the agency to move between clubs in a way that would be right and reasonable. That is what your concerns derive from, is it not?

Going back to schooling and the considerations around reform, I noted the part of the video that was about life skills and financial awareness. Will you seek to push those issues in the context of education reform and curriculum changes?

Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee

Climate Change People鈥檚 Panel

Meeting date: 16 April 2024

Ben Macpherson

Is there a responsibility on the media to amplify some of the good work that is going on? If the Government seeks to raise awareness of it, that is only part of the story. The media has then got to take it forward鈥攖o tell that story.

My question follows on well from what you and the convener have said. You made three recommendations on the theme of communication. Will you tell us a bit more about the evidence that you heard to suggest that the Scottish Government could do more to improve its communication on climate change?

Just as a point of clarity, we will, of course, take all the recommendations and press the Government on them. It is for the Government to make the decisions about funding and policy changes although, obviously, Parliament votes on that. I hear your point about what to press on, and we will definitely consider that and raise it with the Government.
