Health, Social Care and Sport Committee (Virtual)

Inquiry on Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People

Meeting date: 11 January 2022

Gillian Martin

Thank you. We are very aware of the fact that the issue that we are talking about is not just a health issue but one that goes across a range of disciplines. With that in mind, we have reached out to other parliamentary committees to work with them on all the different drivers that affect the mental and physical health of children and young people.

On the initial question that I posed, we come finally to Suzanne Shields.

Transvaginal Mesh Removal Reimbursement Scheme

Meeting date: 11 January 2022

Gillian Martin

As I do not see any other member wanting to ask questions, I thank all the witnesses for their time this morning, and once again thank them for giving us sight of the draft scheme.

Okay; thank you very much. I will pass over to Gillian Mackay, who has questions on the scheme鈥檚 flexibility.

We have to move on. I am sorry that I cannot let members back in to ask supplementary questions, but I am prioritising the evidence from our witnesses, which is fantastic, to give them more time to tell us their views.

Let us move to the issue of stigma, on which Emma Harper has a question. I ask members to direct their questions to particular witnesses as much possible. Witnesses should put an R in the chat box if they have something to add.

We move on to questions from David Torrance.

Apologies, David鈥擨 have just realised that Emma Harper has asked for a supplementary on the points that Sue Webber raised.

Budget Scrutiny 2022-23

Meeting date: 21 December 2021

Gillian Martin

Colleagues will dig into that further. As I said, Gillian Mackay in particular has questions on Covid-19.

The programme for government sets out longer-term spending commitments, but there is no medium-term framework in place. That is understandable, because we are dealing with an acute situation. In relation to our scrutiny, will more evidence come forward about informing decisions and the allocation of increasing budgets? For example, we want to keep an eye on the sum of 拢2.5 billion that has been promised over the course of the parliamentary session, and on the balance of care, with regard to the commitments that more than 50 per cent of front-line national health service spending will go to community health and that there will be a 25 per cent increase in primary care spending. Can you give the committee an idea of the medium-term plans?

Health, Social Care and Sport Committee

Common Framework on Public Health Protection and Health Security

Meeting date: 21 December 2021

Gillian Martin

Thank you, Sue. I will move on. I trailed the fact that Gillian Mackay would be asking questions about consultation and scrutiny, so I will bring her in.

That seems to be an issue that I can take to our Conveners Group. Obviously, the committee has had common frameworks before it in the past year or so. We can learn a lot of lessons from that, which might inform how we think scrutiny should happen. We will take that issue away for consideration.

Evelyn Tweed has questions on cross-border co-operation.
