Transvaginal Mesh Removal (Cost Reimbursement) (Scotland) Bill: Stage 1

Meeting date: 26 October 2021

Sue Webber

In one of your earlier statements, Terry, you spoke of new staff coming on board. Where are they being recruited from? What multidisciplinary areas of expertise do they cover that the team did not cover previously?

Is that the realistic medicine that you referred to earlier in the discussion today?

Thank you for clarifying that鈥攊t was very helpful. What is the position for women who have had mesh removal surgery that has not gone as they expected? When surgery has not been as successful as it was hoped it would be and there are on-going issues, how will that be covered or addressed by the bill?

My question is also for Terry O鈥橩elly. We have heard a lot from witnesses about the logistical challenges in managing the private sector experience in the US and England, and the challenges facing the NHS service in gaining trust. Obviously, an NHS-based service will be much better at managing the anticipated and unplanned outcomes of the complex surgery. What is being done to benchmark and reassure people that in Scotland we will have among the best mesh removal specialist services?

Health and Care Bill

Meeting date: 5 October 2021

Sue Webber

Welcome, cabinet secretary. My question is about online advertising. You mentioned the reasons why you want to take that approach, but have you had any thoughts about what you might like to do that would be different from the approaches of the other UK nations?

Social Care Stakeholder Session

Meeting date: 28 September 2021

Sue Webber

I want to try to bring everything together into one question and contextualise what I am asking about with something that was in the press over the weekend and which I think highlights the need to promote preventative support, collaboration and the integration of new and more innovative solutions such as the West Lothian Food Train, which I have visited.

I suppose that my question is for Derek Feeley and Judith Proctor, given that Mr Feeley鈥檚 comment that there are things that we should be doing now and Ms Proctor鈥檚 role in representing all IJBs. At the weekend, we heard about a 90-year-old woman who starved to death. It is the first time that that has happened for decades. Age Scotland called it 鈥渄esperately sad鈥, saying that it highlighted the scale of pensioner malnutrition around Scotland, and it also mentioned 鈥渉arrowing stories鈥 from pensioners who talk about empty cupboards and problems with grocery deliveries, particularly people who are not online. While we are waiting for what we are discussing to happen, what can we do with the legislation that we have to repurpose these services and stop such things happening now? What can we do with, say, commissioning and procurement?

I asked Leigh Johnston to respond, although I do not know whether she wants to.

Let us ask the King鈥檚 Fund. I am sorry鈥攎y lenses have gone, and I cannot see anyone鈥檚 faces.

What other funding models might be appropriate for a national care service?
