Am I correct in saying that the local democracy network was partly funded through the BBC licence fee?

We had a panel of elite athletes in front of us last week, and we asked them what questions they would want to put to you about broadcasting and wider journalism. We have covered quite a good deal of that, but one of the points that Eilidh Doyle raised was about how we refer to women鈥檚 careers. She felt quite aggrieved that, when she turned 30, she was referred to as being at the end of her career, and it was said that she was coming to the end of her life in the sport. The reality was that she had just won an Olympic medal and she went on to run until she was 35. I am keen to understand whether there is cognisance of that in journalism more widely and whether there could be engagement with individuals about their own career and their own progress rather than such generalisations being made.

The other issue that was put to us about broadcast journalism by those athletes relates in particular to the fact that we are more used to seeing presenters and the talent in broadcasting being female, but Gemma Fay put quite starkly to us that very often she did not feel that she is treated as well as her male counterparts are in the research and information that is provided when she takes part in a broadcast. She has had to do a lot of her own research, but often it was provided to the top male talent. She found that experience quite negative, and she was keen to understand what broadcasters are doing to try and level the playing field and treat talent in the same way across all programmes.

That would be ideal. I call Gillian Mackay.

I am afraid that we need to move on鈥擨 am very conscious of the time. However, if we have time at the end, we will certainly come back to those issues.

Clare Haughey has questions on harassment and abuse.

In the interests of time, perhaps you could direct that question to just one person.

You can ask one more, and then we will need to move to a conclusion.

We have three supplementaries. I am conscious that we are over time, so I just want to check whether the witnesses are happy to take them. If they are okay for time and the committee is happy to bear with us, that is fine.

I must ask members to pose only one supplementary and direct it to only one person. We will start with Emma Harper.
