Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee

MV Glen Sannox (Hull 801) and MV Glen Rosa (Hull 802)

Meeting date: 24 October 2023

Jim Fairlie

It is just a follow-up and a follow-on to what Douglas Lumsden was asking you earlier. Again, this may be something that has been discussed in the past that I do not know about. You talk about these weekly and monthly meetings that you have had, and Douglas was referring to the fact that this committee did not know about the rejection of your 1261 application. You alluded to the fact that you waited until you had found a solution. When you go to the Government, is your point to tell it what your problems are? The Government will not come to you with a solution and you need to find the solutions yourself, so I presume that any delay is not about trying to hide anything but is so that you can say, β€œRight, I know what the problem is, but here is the solution.” Am I right in that assessment?

Thanks, convener. I have no relevant interests other than a prior membership of NFU Scotland.

Fundamentally, it is the design.

COVID-19 Recovery Committee

Recovery of NHS Dental Services

Meeting date: 29 June 2023

Jim Fairlie

I presume that all four nations of the UK are having similar issues with recruitment for dentistry. Tom Ferris, you said that there are 5,700 people who potentially want to come here to practise dentistry at varying levels. What is the hold-up? We have an urgent problem, so why is there a difficulty?

COVID-19 Recovery Committee

Decision on Taking Business in Private

Meeting date: 29 June 2023

Jim Fairlie

Good morning, and welcome to the 15th meeting in 2023 of the COVID-19 Recovery Committee. Alex Rowley has given his apologies and I welcome Jackie Baillie, who is attending as his substitute.

Item 1 is for the committee to decide whether to take item 5, which is consideration of a draft legacy paper, in private. Do members agree?

Members indicated agreement.

Annual Reports

Meeting date: 29 June 2023

Jim Fairlie

Indeed. Thank you, Murdo.

There are no further comments from members. I would like to offer my personal thanks to the members of the clerking team, who have been absolutely brilliant and have made me look almost competent. I will also mention Alex Rowley, who has been a fantastic member of the team, and Siobhian Brown, the previous convener, who was given a ministerial post, which is why I am now sitting in this chair.

That concludes the public part of our meeting.

10:48 Meeting continued in private until 11:06.

David Notman, I will ask you very quickly about something that you have just said. You are saying that, across the country generally, you have a lot of dentists who are wedded to the existing system. However, we have heard members of the Scottish Dental Association and the Scottish Dental Practice Owners say that they have been completely excluded from talks and negotiations about reform. Are you not hearing that people want reform?
